A university is an institution of higher education and research, which grants academic degrees in a variety of subjects. A university is a corporation that provides both undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word university is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, roughly meaning "community of teachers and scholars."

History

Definition

Representation of a university class in the 1350s

The original Latin word "universitas" was used at the time of emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, to describe specialized "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located." The original Latin word referred to degree-granting institutions of learning in Western Europe, where this form of legal organization was prevalent, and from where the institution spread around the world. For non-related educational institutions of antiquity which did not stand in the tradition of the university and to which the term is only loosely and retrospectively applied, see ancient centers of higher learning.

Is the modern University system the most practical way to train professionals like Engineers, Accountants etc?
Q. Universities are expensive. It's an ethical dilemna that we have to go into 150K of debt just to try to obtain the American dream. Universities have a lot of requirements that have little to do with the jobs of accounting and engineering. In the distant (maybe not so distant) past these jobs were trained through free apprenticeships, not university, and you didn't have to start in 6 figures of debt just to try to obtain a middle class job.

A. I think you are correct in that the university system is not the best way to educate many professions including engineering and accounting. In Great Britain, medical doctors are trained for the medical profession right after high school (their equivalent) and omit the courses normally required in a liberal arts education or the first two years of a University in America. If I recall they spend four years in med. school followed by two years of internship and another year or two if they are in a specialty. Therefore, they can be out and practicing medicine after six years or 23 or 24 years old or 25 or 26 with a specialty. I think accountants and engineers should spend 2 years in a school or university and another 2 years as interns… [cont.]

Is California Polytechnic State University- Pomona a good university for a student aspiring to become a vet?
Q. I would probably major in animal sciences or something like that. Is this field of study at this university good or well-known to veterinary schools? Also what other universities would be good for someone who wants to go to vet school? I also am considering UC-Davis, but that is way farther than Cal Poly Pomona. What would you recommend?

A. Are you kidding? Cal Poly Pomona is one of the best universities in California for that major. UC Davis is probably the best in the country and therefore you'll need a 4.2 and a 1500/1600 on your SATs to go there. If you can't get into UCD, CPP is your next best bet. They've got great facilities including the world famous Kellogg Arabian Horse Center. In case you haven't also heard, the W.K. Kellogg foundation just gifted $42 million dollars to the school, the largest such gift in the entire CSU system ever. You may also consider Cal Poly SLO, but only Pomona also offer a zoology option. Cal Poly emphasizes hands on learning, so you'll get plenty of labs working with real animals, and you won't be learning just from books. Visit… [cont.]

A. U have to be prepared before abt which uni u wanna go, depending upon its Cost, courses offered, location n other factors u think r required by u. Once u decided u can pick n select those in selection n u r official toefl score will be sent directly to those universities(no extra cost will be charged). this is one of the best method to send ur official score report to uni's gudluckk..
