The College and university rankings are a lists of universities and liberal arts colleges in higher education, an order determined by any combination of factors. Rankings can be based on subjectively perceived "quality," on some combination of empirical statistics, or on surveys of educators, scholars, students, prospective students or others. Rankings are often consulted by prospective students and their parents in the university and college admissions process. In addition to rankings of institutions, there are also rankings of specific academic programs, departments, and schools. Rankings are conducted by magazines and newspapers and in some instances by academic practitioners. (See, for example, law school rankings in the United States.) Rankings may vary significantly from country to country. Colleges outside of the English speaking world are believed to have a distinct disadvantage. A Cornell University study found that the rankings in the United States significantly affected colleges' applications and admissions. In the United Kingdom, several newspapers publish league tables which rank universities. There has been much debate since the late 1990s about both the usefulness and political correctness of college rankings in the United States. Some higher education experts, like Kevin Carey of Education Sector, have argued that such rankings as the U.S. News and World Report's college rankings system is merely a list of criteria that mirrors the superficial characteristics of elite colleges and universities. According to Carey, "[The] U.S. News ranking system is deeply flawed. Instead of focusing on the fundamental issues of how well colleges and universities educate their students and how well they prepare them to be successful after college, the magazine's rankings are almost entirely a function of three factors: fame, wealth, and exclusivity." He suggests that there are more important characteristics parents and students should research to select colleges, such as how well students are learning and how likely students are to earn a degree. GNU Free Documentation License the university of miami is so underrated in college basketball? Q. all of their 4 losses (14-4) have come to teams that have at least been 13th in the rankings.. (UNC, OH ST, CLEMSON, UCONN) do you think that they should at least be ranked? i mean come on! and also what seed do you think they will be in the NCAA Tournament? Asked by Angels 2009 WS Champs!!! - Thu Jan 22 22:37:37 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm an alum and I couldn't agree with you more. I think that many see the U of M as a bad boy school and a party school and it just doesn't garner as much respect as it once did. Sure, the football had a decent season, but outside of South Florida, do you see Coach Shannon getting any respect for the turn around job he has done? No! How about baseball. OK, they didn't prevail, but at least they were in Omaha! Like it or not, these are the 2 elite programs at Miami. I believe their success or lack of it bubbles over to the other sports programs. Meaning...a lot is expected of Miami. Basketball is not getting the respect it deserves. I think the influence of the football and baseball programs has something, perhaps unconsciously, to do with… [cont.] Answered by MICHAEL - Thu Jan 22 22:53:00 2009 Choosing a college/university? Q. Is northeastern a good business school? I noticed it dropped 8 places this year in business week's rankings. I am also thinking of applying to Bentley but the student body doesn't seem that diverse. I also hate the fact that they want you to take 50% LA classes and 50% business classes. So I don't really think it's a fit for me but I'm having trouble deciding on what schools to apply. My plans at the moment are to major in accounting or finance and try and land a job at one of the Big 4 accounting firms or if I major in finance get a job as an analyst. I also want to go to grad school once I can apply. My gpa is a 3.57 and after this semester I'm hoping to get it up around a 3.7. I'm involved in the economics club at my school… [cont.] Asked by rand0m87 - Mon Mar 3 12:52:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you're a Massachusetts resident, a good option for you may be the school of mgmt at UMass Amherst. It certainly will be your least expensive option, and it's a reputable undergrad program. Of course, it's not in a big city, but it's in a region that has a lot going on, socially, so it may be worth looking at. The best undergrad business programs in the Boston area are: MIT (of course), BC, Northeastern, Bentley, Babson, BU, and UMass Amherst. Bryant I know sometimes ranks above UMass Amherst on some rankings tables, but in reality, UMass seems to have the stronger reputation with employers. To me, the schools with the best reputation with employers (forget the rankings lists) are, in this order: MIT, BC, BU, and Babson. Most of these… [cont.] Answered by RoaringMice - Mon Mar 3 14:16:20 2008 Which School is a better place to study mathematics at, Notre Dame, Boston University, or NYU Poly?
