A community college is a type of educational institution. The term can have different meanings in different countries.

Australia

Australia has had a system of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges for many years. Training is conducted under the National Training System, the Australian system for vocational education and training (VET) under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF), in which employers, the States of Australia, and the Commonwealth Government, formalise a curriculum available for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to teach and assess the competency of students. Courses are part of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

TAFEs or their outlying schools are in most large towns, and cities.

How can I tell if one community college is better than another or if a particular community college is good?
Q. I want to attend a community college. I have the choice narrowed to two schools--Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Northern Virginia Community College in Alexandria, Virginia. Aside from trying to glean clues from their catalogs, can anyone give me some suggestions to figure out which is the better school? I mean, is their some objective source--some accrediting agency or something of the sort--that could help me tell the good schools from the bad ones or which schools do a good job of preparing students to transfer into 4 year schools and succeed once they've transferred?

A. Go visit and talk to people in programs that you are interested in. Many times you can contact the school in advance and they'll be help you get in touch with the people you would want to talk to.

The community college of my choice canceled the last two scheduled SOAR testings?
Q. I was planning on taking the Orange Coast College SOAR testing on Monday; however it has been canceled. Is there another option? If I take a SOAR test at another community college, can I still use the scores from that college to attend OCC? I have not called in, yet because I have just found out tonight. Is there also a possibility of a rescheduling?

How can I find the right community college before I come to the United States?
Q. I have been trying to pin down the right community college. The task is a lot harder than I have ever imagined. This is because there are no websites for the community colleges which are within the location I am looking for. Moreover, when I search for community colleges in general without specifying a location, the websites I come across always have a form to be filled out and emailed to them (in the homepage) and there are no details about the programs, fees, schedules, etc. How can I find the right community college before I come to the United States?

A. Try some educational agencies nearby. There are usually some companies who helps people find schools. Alternatively you can ask your school teacher for help or guidance.
