What is the cheapest way to call Jamaica from the USA?
Q. I'm going on a medical mission to serve the poor in Jamaica in a couple months. I have found calling Jamaica to be very expensive compared to other countries for some reason. I need to speak with people there helping to coordinate our trip and don't want to go into debt before I get there!

A. I am also living in North America, and I have found that there is no real cheap way, but the best and least expensive way is by using phone cards. One that I would reccomend is called the 'Euro Shades' phone card. It is distributed by the company MCI. They give you about 2 hours for just about $3.50 US. Hope you're able to find, but it not, just try another CAribbean calling card. I know one called Phoenix, but the rate is not as good. It is about $7 for 45 minutes.

What number is Air jamaica rated with all other airlines in the world?
Q. I cant find a list rating all the airlines in the world, I just want someone to find such a list for me or answer with credible sources, plz. I am looking for Air Jamaica specifically though.

A. Check out Skytrax for airline reviews and ratings. It's the world's largest passenger opinion and rating service for the airline industry. Air Jamaica gets a three star (out of five) rating, which isn't bad, but not great:

How safe is it to drive yourself around Jamaica?
Q. We are planning a honeymoon to Jamaica, probably staying in Negril. We are the type of people that have to get out and explore rather than stay inside the resort the entire trip. I've heard all the stories about how rough Jamaica can be, so I want to know if it will be safe to rent a car and drive around on our own? Or is it safer to take a taxi? Any suggestions on where NOT to go?

A. My husband and I stayed at Sandals in Ocho Rios for our wedding & honeymoon. Honestly, I felt more comfortable in the resort. I'm sure the hotel you are staying at provides tours and that might be a safer route to go. The way they drive is insane compared to America. The roads are not paved, it's all dirt and they do speed even though there are numerous signs that say "Don't Speed, Speed Kills." We even passed a cop there in our van on the way to the resort. Just be careful and try to do resort trips where you have a guide and all go together to Dunn's River Falls or other places. Congratulations and I hope that you enjoy your honeymoon very much. :)

A. I'm not from Jamaica but your best bet would be to search on google for something like that. If I was you I would take your cartridge to a refill shop (if they have any in Jamaica) and have them do it. That way it will save you a potential mess and you'll have someone else to blame if it doesn't work!

How do you feel about Air Jamaica being sold to Trinidad and Tobago?
Q. I think its very disappointing to see one of the identities of Jamaica being sold to another country, ive ridden on Air Jamaica when i am coming home and i love its service for many years, i wish the currupt politicians would do more to save it instead of lining their pockets. It will merge with Caribbean Airlines in the future months.

A. Negril is the spot. But I'm not sure if it's worth just a weekend trip. You really need a longer amount of time then a weekend. Let's assume you live in Miami. Getting to MIA prior to flight--1 hour. Flight from MIA to Montego Bay--1 1/2 hours. Clearing customs and getting to Negril--2 hours. If you are lucky and catch a late Friday evening flight OK, otherwise 4 1/2 hours minimum gone on Saturday morning. Getting from Negril to Montego Bay, checking in--2 hours. 1 hour wait at airport. 1 1/2 hour flight home. Clearing customs--1 hour. Getting from MIA to home--???. If you are luck and catch an 8 PM flight from MoBay, that gives you a best case of 42 hours in Negril. As for staying in MoBay, there is no "city center", the… [cont.]

How long does it take to get from Jamaica Station to Lexington Ave via the E subway line?
Q. I am taking the LIRR to Jamaica station, then was planning taking the E line to Lexington Ave. The other option is taking the LIRR to Penn and then the E line uptown to Lexington, but I'm thinking it may be faster or less expensive to go to Jamaica then take the subway. HELP!!!

A. if i were you i would take the LIRR into penn station and then transfer, it will save you lots of time and is only a few more dollars then the LIRR (i did a test on the LIRR website from Mastic and the difference was $2). Make sure you buy your ticket before you get on the train, online of at the ticket booth/machine, they charge more if you buy it once you get on!

A. Well if you are sending charity you are supposed to have no problem or cost having them cleared at customs. The shipping cost from there should be dependent upon the weight of the package. Check the site below to see.

A. To start a nonprofit, you first need to get a very impassioned group of people together who support your idea and will provide some start up funding and serve on the board of directors, you need to get letters of endorsement from existing organizations saying this program is needed, you need to have data that shows your target group is in need whatever service it is that you want to provide and that they are not served otherwise, you need to have profiles of your staff showing they have experience and expertise, and you need to have a draft of what your first year's budget would look like (what expenses you expect to incur, what you expect to pay staff, etc.). You aren't going to have any money until you have donors, and you aren't going… [cont.]

What services would most benefit people in Jamaica?
Q. I'm looking to start a business in Jamaica that would benefit the people. I don't want to start up another tourist attraction, for I believe it is not helping the citizens. In fact, I know most of these attractions benefit a small minority of "foreigners" who come into the country, seek profit, and could careless about the average citizen of Jamaica. I've been brainstorming but would like some opinions of people who have experienced Jamaica or any related developing country.

What are the best deals from California to Jamaica?

A. Not sure about prices from Cali but you can easily look online for that. Just a suggestion though, if you're going to Negril, don't stay at an all inclusive. There are many hotels and B&B's on the beach that will give you a better value. Staying in these places as opposed to an AI supports the local economy and business owners. To me, thats what Jamaica is all about. Don't get me wrong, you'll still have a fantastic relaxing time while giving back. Experience the real thing. The AI's are ruining that island in my opinion. As long as you use common sense you'll be safe. Jamaicans are some of the kindest people I have ever met.

How would an American go about buying land in Jamaica?
Q. We've been to Jamaica 4 times. Last time we went, we met a gentleman from the USA that was buying property so he could have a retirement home some day. Ive heard this is very difficult if you aren't a Jamaican resident. What's involved? I'd like to buy some land now and when we retire, be able to go there and stay as long as our passports allow at any given time...?? Is it possible? Is the land super expensive?
Asked by russrimm - Thu Feb 7 21:44:02 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. My Family used to go every year so got to know the locals in Nigril... My family was given land by a Jamaican family right next to where the Hilton's own land... They are a poor family but by Jamaican standards I guess they are doing well... I don't know if the land is expensive or not to be honest...

A. My Family used to go every year so got to know the locals in Nigril... My family was given land by a Jamaican family right next to where the Hilton's own land... They are a poor family but by Jamaican standards I guess they are doing well... I don't know if the land is expensive or not to be honest... Is Jamaica crowded with college kids during spring break?
Q. Me and the bf are planning a vacation to Jamaica from March 15th - March 20th to Montego Bay, Jamaica. I wanted to know if it is a popular destination for college kids during this time? In other words...will it be crowded? Thanks so much!

A. It won't be crowded with kids during your vacation. April is the traditional spring break time and thats not a time you really want to be in Jamaica--unless you like mobs of people which I suspect you don't. There will be a wide cross section of ages there at this time of year and it will be a little busy in general. although with the economy the way it is there may be less people there. Either way, March is a busy time of year in Jamaica for tourism. Have fun!!
