Im currently working as a temp staff for a local company. im doing some system development and web programming. labour for temp staff is cheap. im earning only $5 per hour. A. It depends where you come from and what course you want to study. Generally, if your country's first lanaguage is not English, you may have to sit for an English Proficiency test of which test may be set by the polytechnic or some accredited body for English Proficiency for non-english natives. If you have GCE or IB or SPM/SPTM or Form 5 (HK) or high school leaving certificate from your country, you should be accepted if your results are not too bad. (Entering a SG polytechnic is much easier than university). If you have a different qualification, you may be considered for admission on a case by case basis. If needed, you may be required to come to Singapore to hand in your admission documents to the relevant polytechnic directly or… [cont.]

A. Simply speaking its but a matter of 3 options. 1. If you are an average student, its better to go via the JC track, for it gives you a higher chance of getting into a degree. 2. If you are a top student, its better to go via the poly track, for since you are going to be in the directors list, you get to skip a year in degree, and possibly even more then 1 year for a foreign degree with great scores for the diploma. (do note that you need to know what you really want to do 10 years down the road) 3. If you are a average student with a very focused career goal in mind, and unsure if you are financially sound enough to get a degree, a poly diploma would certainly be a better option. All in all, JC is a better option for normal students.… [cont.]

A. WPI is a pretty strong engineering school. It's not MIT, sure, but it's certainly reputable. I used to purposefully hire out of that school. It produces graduates who are actually capable of working in the real world, not just studying. I consider WPI a far better school for engineering than Trinity. I strongly suggest that you look at WPI. WPI will get you into a good grad school, if you do well there. It will also get you employed. No one looks down on a WPI degree. I have no idea why you are embarrassed about WPI.

What's the problem with previous poltechnic Universities?
Q. To make my question more clear: I've heard people making negative comments about Universities that were previously polytechnics - statements such as "No way am I going there!" and "I would never go to a polytechnic" made me wonder what the issue is with them. So to pose my question again: why exactly would people make such comments? What's so 'bad' about Universities that were once polytechnics?

Basically everywhere calls itself a University nowadays, but you can hardly compare somewhere which used to be a polytechnic with somewhere like UCL or Durham, who have experience in teaching great minds and researching and publishing work in their subject for many years. The whole idea of a polytechnic was for those who couldn't reach University level, to be able to gain skills in vocational subjects. Now you can pretty much study anything in them.
