From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. The Caribbean (pronounced /ˌkærɨˈbiːən/ or /kəˈrɪbiən/; Dutch Caraïben (help·info); French: Caraïbe or more commonly Antilles; Spanish: Caribe) is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America. Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia). The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea. Geopolitically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a subregion of North America and are organised into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies. The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used. From Wikipedia under the

Hi, I've heard that Caribbean schools have a somewhat larger acceptance rate than American medical schools. Is this true, and if so, what are the acceptance rates? Asked by airforcewolf - Tue Oct 30 01:50:48 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Every Caribbean medical school is run as a business first and a school second. The top tier schools are becoming more competitive, but the other twenty schools will accept just about every one who applies. The bottom tier schools don't care about your academic credentials, just your ability to pay the tuition (and few of those have access to student loans). My brother and I are saving money to send my parents on a cruise to the Caribbean in 2008. I know I'm planning very early, but I'm wondering for people who have gone there or just have a lot of cruise line experience - I know Royal Caribbean is suppose to be a very nice line, but I'm wondering what Princess is like. I looked them up online and I'm interested in their mini suites, they look nice and roomy, as far as rooms go. Also, are there any spots that you just "have to go to" when you cruise the Caribbean? Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm pretty sure that we're all going to go, the four of us, I'll be 25 by then and my brother will be 22, so I want to find something that will be comfortable and fun for my parents and for… [cont.] Asked by sorcha - Thu Jan 4 22:25:46 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments A. Very nice idea and I'm sure your parents will appreciate the thought and enjoy having their whole family with them on this cruise. For something this important make sure you find a good travel agent to plan your trip and handle all the details. A good travel agent will ask you a lot of questions about what you'd like to experience on your cruise, what are the interests of everyone going, if there is anything in particular you'd like to see or do on your cruise, etc. before discussing where you'ld like to go. A ppoor agent will ask you what you want, hand you one or two brochures and tell you about why THEY like a particular cruise line. If you run into this type of agent on the phone or in person, just tell them thank you and keep… [cont.] Answered by T - Fri Jan 5 18:12:08 2007 What is the best affordable caribbean island for families with small children?

If you are traveling from the states i'D definitely look into traveling to puerto rico. if you stay somewhere other than san juan this can be affordable vacation destination. try the fajardo area if you are looking to do day trips such as visiting the el yunque rain forest, taking a sailing /Snorkeling trip or if you like to visit one of prs bio-BAYS. if you want to relax and spend time on the beach head west and stay in rincon. villa cofresi is a good choice for a 1St time trip. i have been vacationing happily in puerto rico consecutively for 10 YEARS. if you travel off season between june and october it will be even more cost effective. here are some websites for you to explore.
