Main article: Juris Doctor See also: Law school in the United States

Law school in the United States is a postgraduate level program which lasts three years and results in the awarding of the Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. Some schools in Louisiana also award the Graduate Diploma in Civil Law (D.C.L.) together with the J.D. In order to get admitted to a United States American Bar Association (ABA) approved law program a prospective student must take the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and have graduated with, at least, a four-year undergraduate (bachelor's) degree in any major. There are 196 ABA approved law schools to choose from, which can make the decision process difficult.

How important is job history on a law school application?
Q. I will be applying to law school next year and I am concerned about my lack of job experience. I've been working consistently since I was 16, but either in sales or in the childcare industry. Will these type of jobs badly affect my chances of getting into an excellent law school? I attend a very prestigious school with a decent GPA and am an athlete as well as a board member of a large club. Should I try to get a job in another field in order to boost my application? If so, what type of positions should I be looking for. Thanks!

A. The short answer is that it isn't a big factor. Most law schools focus on your LSAT score, your undergraduate GPA, and your personal statement, with each school giving more or less weight to each of those three depending on its philosophy. The vast majority of law students are coming directly from finishing their undergraduate degrees and have had no opportunity for significant employment before they apply to law school. My opinion is that your time would be better spent getting into some additional leadership positions or doing some volunteer work. These sorts of things can help you look like a more "well rounded" candidate to the selection committee. However, one way your job history could HURT you is if you have any kind of… [cont.]

How are law school classes different than undergraduate classes?
Q. I'm currently an undergraduate planning on attending law school. Is the format the same (lecture, midterm, paper, final exam)? Or is it different. Also, which one requires more work?

How does a senior in high school with a low GPA get to law school?
Q. I picked up a school catalog at school, and have always had an interest in law; but never gave it a second shot. I have an interest in all the courses that the catalog mentions lawyers should have, many of them, I've taken from self study books, the dummies series, the DIY stuff. How do I get from a school with a low GPA, to a law school?

A. Law school is a graduate degree in the US. You need a Bachelor's degree first. The good news is that law schools don't look at your high school grades. The bad news is that they do look at your college grades -- so you have to do well when you get to college. You still have time to turn you life around.
