To black Greeks (NPHC): what do you think about other cultural Greeks stepping?
Q. (Didnt know whether to put this in the higher edu section or in the cultural, but I think this is more a cultural thing) I love stepping, and Ive always enjoyed it and enjoyed watching step shows. However, it took some time before I truly learned about its history (a D9 member suggested the book "Soulstepping"), its African roots, how much it means to BGLO members, and how some feel stepping "belongs" to black Greeks in a way. Though on our campus, we seem to get positive reception performing at step shows (we are an Asian fraternity-- and our school has 6 BGLO's, Alpha Phi Alpha, Phi Beta Sigma, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta and Delta Sigma Theta), Ive heard that elsewhere black Greeks complain about MGC Greeks "stea [cont.]

A. Honestly, I regard other non-NPHC organizations stepping as a compliment to NPHC organizations. To me, attempting what someone else has done opens the doors for more diversity and cultural understanding. Sometimes, we get so caught up on the details instead of seeing the big picture. I think stepping takes creativity, hard work (lots of that) and an unbelievable amount of teamwork!!! I applaud your fraternity for stepping and I hope you guys keep steppin'! Actually, I'm more interested in community service than stepping. My heart is for making all communities better through diversification and service!!!

I was thinking of pledging to a black fraternity?
Q. I was thinking of pledging to a fraternity for a while now since most of my family are members of a black fraternities and sororities. Anyways, I was thinking about pledging either Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Phi Alpha, or Phi Beta Sigma. I was wondering what the differences are between them. I am Black and I always loved the festivities and the step shows my parents and family took me to. I was just wondering what was the difference between the fraternities because my uncle really wants me to pledge Omega and my other uncle wants me to pledge Alpha. Like I said, most of my family are members of Black Fraternities.

A. To the first poster, there are tons of "white" sororities (with heavily white membership) so let's not toot that horn. Technically, anyone can join a "white" or "black" sorority. Whether they choose to is another issue entirely. I really don't know the differences between Omegas, Alphas, and the others. They all seem pretty similar to me.
