Michigan Technological University (abbr. Michigan Tech or MTU) is an American public university with a range of degree offerings. Michigan Tech's campus is located on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the city of Houghton.

History

Michigan Tech was founded in 1885 as the Michigan Mining School. Established by the state of Michigan to train mining engineers to operate the local copper mines, the school started with four faculty members and twenty-three students. The name changed to the Michigan College of Mines, then Michigan College of Mining and Technology, and, in 1964, greatly expanded academic offerings propelled the school to its current designation as Michigan Technological University. Although engineering still accounts for some 55 percent of all enrollment, the University now offers more than 120 degree programs.

The average overall ACT scores for incoming students is 25.6, compared to 21.2 nationally. Undergraduate enrollment in environmental, geological, and mechanical engineering all rank in the top eight nationally, and the scientific and technical communication program is one of the nation’s largest. According to the US News and World Report, Michigan Tech graduates leave campus with some of the lowest debt in the nation.

College Jobs?
Q. Next year I am going off to college in the middle of nowhere, just over 500 miles away from home. The college I plan to attend is Michigan Technological University, nestled in a town of less than 7,000 people. There are only about 5500 students at the university. I'm going to need a job while I'm there to pay for gas to drive home for Christmas and summer and to have some pocket money. What are some good options that I could do? Because it's so far north (one of the northernmost cities in Michigan), it's VERY cold and VERY snowy in the winter (they average 210 inches), so outside things probably won't work and the town plows everything regularly. What jobs could I do that I could cram into my schedule?

A. Just look for a job on campus or at a local market or something. your options are infinite. and by the way check your university's page and see if they have job applications for on campus jobs. good luck.

Purchasing Sports Equipment?
Q. I got my acceptance letter to Michigan Technological University (one of the best tech schools in the country) 2 weeks ago. It's located in Houghton, MI, on the middle of the Keewenaw Peninsula (the part of the Upper Peninsula that sticks out into Lake Superior), so there's lots of snow. Broomball is a huge sport up there, and about 85% of the student body is part of an IM broomball league. It's kind of like hockey, but adjusted quite a bit. I used to play floor hockey but have never played ice hockey or broomball. What equipment would I need, and what should I look for when I get it? I know I'll need to buy a hockey helmet/facecage and hockey gloves, but what else? What should I look for in a helmet?

A. Top to bottom you will need: -Helmet: To answer your question, the biggest thing to look for is fit. If you are comfortable then you will be safe. Look for things like memory foam or size adjustment systems. -Facemask: Just get one to match the helmet. Shoulder pads: Fit. More money= more protection, better materials -Elbow pads: Same thing. Comfort is a must -Neck guard: Not much choice. Take what you can find -Gloves: Its about feel. Try some on while using a stick. Different players like different things. -Pants: More money gets you more protection, but adds bulk. I'd go somewhere in the middle. -Jock strap (can): I would go with the yellow mesh shorts. -Shin pads: There are different little systems inside the pads. Look for a pad that… [cont.]
