Single girl planning a trip to Central America and Caribbean?
Q. I'm 27, blonde, blue-eyed, and planning to explore Central America and the Caribbean next year. I'm wanting to go by myself, and plan to research the hell out of where I'm going and learn basic Spanish, but wondered if you had any thoughts or feedback about travelling as a single gal? I'm sticking to the relatively safe spots...starting in Costa Rica, then heading up to Cuba and then Belize. Any things I should definitely do (and not do) beyond the obvious common sense? Suggestions for timing? Thank you so much!

A. My experience of traveling in Costa Rica, sometimes alone and sometimes with other young women from the States, varied in terms of how comfortable I felt. Being blonde could make it a little harder on you (I have dark hair, but my blonde friends often got more attention when we were at bars or other places). If you are in a big city (such as San Jose), try to find out which neighborhoods are OK to walk alone in. Many are fine, but others are better avoided. Overall, it's true that you don't need to be terribly afraid, but to have common sense. I rarely felt nervous taking taxis alone. I took long bus trips by myself, which was fine as long as I didn't stay too long at the bus station after dark. And if anyone makes you… [cont.]
