From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Kappa (uppercase Κ, lowercase κ or ϰ; Greek: Κάππα) is the 10th letter of the Greek alphabet, used to represent the voiceless velar stop, or "k", sound in Ancient and Modern Greek. In the system of Greek numerals it has a value of 20. It was derived from the Phoenician letter Kaph. Letters that arose from kappa include the Roman K and Cyrillic К. Greek proper names and placenames containing kappa are often written in English with "c" due to contemporary rendering into the Latin alphabet by ancient Romans. However, modern transliteration of the Greek language invariably use the letter "k". Compare Κυνοσκεφαλαι, Cynoscephalae (ancient placename); κυνος κεφαλαι, kunos kephalai (phrase), meaning "dog's heads". Greek word καί written with a handwritten variant of kappa, from the Byzantine periodIn mathematics, the kappa curve is named after this letter; the tangents of this curve were first calculated by Barrow (17th Century). I was wondering if anyone could explain the differences between Alpha Kappa Alphas three graduate chapters in DC. I was interested in finding out more about DC's graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and supporting some of their programs and events but then I found out that they actually have three of them and I didn't understand why or how they differed, so I wasn't sure which one I should look into. Asked by JDay - Fri Jun 6 00:45:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Initially Xi Omega was the first chapter in D.C and the area just expanded to three chapters. Rho Mu Omega being the last one in 1988, which is my chapter. Xi Zeta Omega is the other chapter. We work together on many projects and are not as separate as it seems. You can check out the websites and/or attend functions just to see which chapter fits you best. Each chapter all over the world is different, but we don't profess that one is better than the other. The D.C. area is a very big area and Sorors join the chapter that they are most comfortable with. Feel free to visit www.rhomuomega.org to check out my chapter in particular. Q. BGS is the business school honor society. Neither are a fraternity or sorority. Asked by Mike K - Mon Apr 14 06:20:17 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. One is well-known within the business world, the other has a stronger reputation in the community at large. And while I'm not sure about Beta Gamma, Phi Beta Kappa is nationally recognized as the first fraternity founded in the United States. While it is now better known as an honor society, it still recognizes itself as a technical "fraternity".
