Fraternities and sororities (from the Latin words frater and soror, meaning "brother" and "sister" respectively) are fraternal social organizations for undergraduate students. In English, the term refers mainly to such organizations at colleges and universities in North America, although it is also applied to analogous European groups also known as corporations. Similar, but less common, organizations also exist for secondary school students. In modern usage, the term Greek letter organization is often synonymous with the terms "fraternity" and "sorority".

Typically, Greek letter organizations are single-sex, initiatory organizations with membership considered active during the undergraduate years only, although a notable exception to this are historically black, latino multicultural, and professional fraternities, in which active membership continues, and into which members are often initiated long after the completion of their undergraduate degrees. Greek letter organizations may sometimes be considered mutual aid societies, providing academic and social activities. Some groups also maintain a chapter house, providing residential and dining facilities for members.

What is the purpose of Business or Professional Sororities?
Q. I have heard of Delta Phi Gamma or Iota Phi Lambda but what is their purpose and are they respected just as the Historically Black sororities are? Or are these two groups no more than 'wannabe greeks"?

A. HI. I am a Member of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated. We were established in June 1929. Both organizations provide a different spin on Sororities. Not to say we do not have social events as other traditional sororities, but our primarily focus is professional and business initiatives. Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the principles of the need to advance women in the field of business. You should really review our website which is located at www.iota1929.org. You will be able to learn more about our history, programs and membership. As far as whether or not this organization is respected among other Greeks, I would have to say it would depend on the person you ask. Many people who are aware of us, feel we are… [cont.]

How do members of black sororities feel about the new memoir that deals with a girl pledging underground?
Q. The author changed the names and colors of the black greek organizations, but it's pretty clear that the author was attempting to pledge alpha kappa alpha sorority, incorporated.

A. PLEASE give us the title and author of this book! And I think that anyone who pledges underground is retarded. You aren't even reconized as an official member. Why not just just pledge the right way and be reconized officially? What are you proving by pledging underground- that you can "go hard"?? And no, I am not a member of a sorority, but when I was in college i was mesmerized by the Black greek culture and I aspired to pledge a certain sorority. . . but I'm no longer enrolled in school anymore, atleast not now. I still aspire to pledge when I am enrolled again.
